IPAN Associate 4iP Council is hosting a free online event which will explore licensing terms and structures for standard essential patents.

What will 4iP Council’s online event cover?

Jonathan M. Barnett, Professor at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, and Director of the law school’s Media, Entertainment, and Technology Law Program, will be a lead speaker at the event.

The event will be introduced by Dr Justus A. Baron, Senior Research Associate at the Searle Center on Law, Regulation, and Economic Growth at Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law.

4iP Council’s event description is as follows: “As the global digital ecosystem migrates to the 5G standard and the myriad technological possibilities it enables, some have proposed relaxing competition law’s strong presumption against cooperation among competitors to permit implementers to collectively bargain with innovators over licensing terms for standard-essential patents. This is a solution in search a problem. Over three decades of licensing practices in the mobile communications market show no evidence of market failure that warrants regulatory intervention. To the contrary: this market has succeeded as a result of patent-dependent standard-development and licensing structures that drive device interoperability and technology adoption. Early deployment of 5G technology in the smartphone and automotive markets does not suggest otherwise”.

There will be a Q&A session after the presentation.
