IPAN Associate 4iP Council is hosting a free educational online event which will explore whether the value of Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) should be independent of the level of licensing in the value chain.
Registration details are accessible here for the online event which will take place at 15:00 – 16:00 GMT on 28 January 2021.
What is an SEP?
An SEP is a patent claiming technology that is essential for a product which uses standardised technology to comply with a particular industry standard. For example, some technologies required to create 4g and 5g compliant mobile devices, including mobile phones, are covered by SEPs.
Owners of SEPs are required to agree to fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) royalty terms for licensees.
What will 4iP Council’s online event cover?
The presenters at the online event are the co-authors of a recent paper in which they argue that the value of enabling technologies, such as SEPs, is best determined in relation to the value it produces to the consumer or end-user, regardless of the licensing level. The event will cover:
- How FRAND-based standards have generated globally successful markets.
- Why SEP value is dependent on the end-use value but independent of the level of licensing in the value chain.
- Legal, economic, and organisational factors that can guide market actors to determine the optimal level of licensing through private ordering.
- Two cases studies related to optical standards and cellular standards.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to address their questions to experts.
