What’s in a Name? Leveraging Brand Value through Trade Marks

This IPAN event took place on the 26th September 2018.

This network meeting discussed the role of Trade Marks in brand value, reviewing how trade mark supported brand value is leveraged in company strategy, and the the value of IP insurance. IPAN were delighted to host this panel of experts who explored the role of trade marks in their own brand value experience. Their presentations are available below.

About David Haigh

David is the CEO and founder of Brand Finance plc. David qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse in London. He worked in international financial management then moved into the marketing services sector, firstly as the Financial Director of The Creative Business and then as Financial Director of WCRS & Partners. He left to set up a financial marketing consultancy, which was later acquired by Publicis, the pan European marketing services group, where he worked as a director for five years.

David moved to Interbrand as Director of Brand Valuation in its London-based global brand valuation practice, leaving in 1996 to launch Brand Finance. David has represented the British Standards institute on the International Standards Committee working party on the standardisation of brand valuation methods and practices, whose draft standard (ISO 10668) was published in November 2010.

David has written many articles for the marketing and financial press on branded businesses and brand valuation and is the author of numerous publications. He also lectures on the subject of branded business, brand and intangible asset valuation at many of the leading business schools around the world.

About Lia Young

Lia has since 2012 managed the trademark portfolio of Caterpillar’s flagship brands in Europe, Middle East and Russia. Caterpillar Inc., is a Fortune 100 Company whose brand is consistently listed in Interbrand’s top 100 Best Global Brands having a 2017 Interbrand valuation of $4.8B. Lia also leads the global trademark strategy and activity for several European based subsidiary brands such as Perkins, MAK, FG Wilson and MWM. Based at Caterpillar’s engine facility in Peterborough, UK, Lia is a Solicitor registered to practice in England and Wales and a Chartered Trademark Attorney. She is a member of the IP Federation’s Trademark Committee and having had a 20+ year career with the industrial giant, she is regularly invited to speak about trademarks and brand protection from an in-house perspective.

About Paul Wishart

Paul has many years of experience working in the London Market, placing business with Lloyd’s Syndicates and Company Insurers, and also handling claims. His background has been predominately in professional indemnity insurance, but he also arranges Directors and Officers (D&O) cover, crime (including computer crime), packages for financial institutions (PI, D&O and Crime), cyber insurance and tech E&O.

Additionally, Paul places intellectual property (IP) risks, and studied IP modules on his LLB. He has particular expertise in assisting legal professionals arrange insurance for themselves, e.g. their professional indemnity insurance, and for their clients e.g. IP cover, and After-the-Event cover (with litigation funding if required).
